EU to spur innovation in green markets

Publish date: January 9, 2008

Written by: Eivind Hoff

The European Commission launched on 7 January a “Lead Markets Initiative” (LMI) in order to accelerate the growth of green sectors in the EU. As a start, action plans are being drawn up for six areas - eHealth, protective textiles, sustainable construction, recycling, bio-based products and renewable energy.

In each of these areas, the Commission has identified different measures the EU can take to boost growth. They turn around improved legislation to reduce burdens on innovative businesses, the use of public procurement to encourage green products, standardisation/labelling/certification, as well as softer support measures, such as awareness campaigns etc.

More information is available on http://ec.europa.eu/enterprise/leadmarket/leadmarket.htm (the action plans are not yet published).
