BRUSSELS – The European Commission published on April 28th a comprehensive strategy on clean and energy efficient vehicles. The strategy provides a policy framework for the uptake of greener vehicles in Europe and involves the implementation of a series of legislative and non-legislative measures in areas including CO2 emissions, electric vehicles and car taxation.

The strategy also contains specific measures for encouraging the market take-up of greener vehicles. The commission will issue guidelines on incentives to consumers to buy cleaner vehicles. It also plans to amend rules on CO2 labeling for cars.

In terms of electric vehicles, the EU will develop a standard to “ensure interoperability and connectivity between the electricity supply point and the charger”, an issue which is key to the commercial deployment of greener vehicles.
