Construction of Bulgarian nuclear power plant Belene accepted

Publish date: November 13, 2007

The European Commission accepted the construction project for the nuclear power plant Belene suggested by the Russian Company Atomstroyeksport.

The press centre of the National Electricity Company in Bulgaria informed that after examining the documents sent to the General directorate Energy and Transport towards the European Commission the European experts draw the conclusion that the preliminary agreement from last year for the construction of Nuclear Power Plant Belene is not in contradiction with the agreement for the creation of a Nuclear Energy European Community and therefore it could be realized.

The contract is expected to be signed in December and the building will start most probably in January 1st 2008 and is expected to finish in 2014, the Serbian news agency Tanjug informs.

The project’s value is put at roughly EUR4bn. According to earlier reports, Atomstroyexport won a tender for the construction of the Belene plan in Bulgaria on October 31, 2006. The company has been commissioned to implement intergovernmental agreements on building nuclear facilities abroad, and is now engaged in the construction of seven power generation units in China, India, Iran and Bulgaria.
