Dissatisfactory oil spill preparedness in Arkhangelsk

Publish date: February 19, 2005

According to the Deputy Governor in Arkhangelsk Oblast Igor Norko, a total of 36 regional companies run businesses which include a risk for oil spills.

Only 5 of these companies have concluded cooperation agreements with enterprises which know how to deal with oil spill localisation and clean up. The deputy governor now fears the dissatisfactory oil spill preparedness could pose a major threat to environment in the region. The 31 companies without contracts with oil spill clean-up specialists will have to anticipate increasing pressure from regional authorities, Regnum.ru reported.
