US will help Russian navy with a transport vessel for spent fuel

The U.S. want to help the Russian Northern Fleet with securing of spent fuel from nuclear submarines. According to the U.S. vice-secretary of State Strobe Talbot, a new service vessel for transport of spent fuel to the Russian navy could be build in the U.S.

Talbott discussed nuclear safety issues with the foreign ministers of the Barents Region countries in Luleå, Sweden this week. According to the Norwegian newspaper Nordlys the suggested project is not confirmed by Russia. The Norwegian company Kværner Maritime a.s. is also working on a service vessel project for transporting Russian naval fuel from the submarine bases at the Kola Peninsula.
