Volgodonsk NPP shut down after breakdown

The reactor of the Volgodonsk nuclear power plant stalled on November 7th, after a short circuit in the high-voltage power transmission line the plant feeds.

The plant’s generator was damaged and the automatic safety shut down system was triggered. The repairs are expected to be completed by November 17th, Interfax reported. The consumers continue to receive the energy generated by the plant before the accident. On the international INES scale of nuclear accidents that ranges from 1 (anomaly) to 7 (major accident), the incident was ranked as a 1.The station, which has only one functioning nuclear reactor, is located in the town of Volgodonsk in the southern Rostov region.
