CIUDEN starts activities in first experimental CO2 storage plant in Spain

Publish date: July 19, 2010

The exploration of the subsurface structures has started as part of the first experimental CO2 storage plant in Spain. The exploration involves a seismic survey at a depth of 1500 metres and covering 35 km2 in the northern region of Hontomín, Burgos. This is a preliminary step to decide the exact location for the construction of the first pilot plant to demonstrate the technology for the geological storage of CO2 in deep saline aquifers.

CIUDEN – La Fundación Ciudad de la Energía – is the primary Spanish Government institution for the development of programs for CO2 capture and geological storage (CCS).

The seismic survey is the first phase of the work to be carried out before constructing the R&D plant. The survey will last till the end of August 2010 with an estimated cost of nearly 4 million euro.

The next phase will be the data processing and the study of the area and the first test injections of CO2 which are expected to take place throughout 2011 and 2012.

The total investment from the Spanish Government through CIUDEN to carry out the research will be around 20 million euro by 2012.
