BRUSSELS – Finnish utilities Fortum and Teollisuuden Voima (TVO) in cooperation with the Danish A.P. Moller – Maersk Group have announced a joint CO2 capture and storage project (CCS).

CO2 will be captured at the Meri-Pori coal-fired power plant in Finland and transported by ship for geological storage in depleted oil and gas fields in the Danish North Sea for use as part of an Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR) project.

The coal-fired power plant is located at Pori on the west coast of Finland and has an installed capacity of 565 megawatts (MW). The CCS plant is planned to process approximately 50 percent of the plant’s flue gas and be able to capture 90 percent of the CO2. This will allow for storage of over 1.2 million tonnes of CO2 per year.
For funding purposes, Maersk, Fortum and TVO are looking to qualify for funding under the EU CCS Demonstration Programme subject to successful project development. The selection for this funding is expected to occur in 2011. The project aims to be fully operative by 2015.
