“Such small pilot projects for CCS are important first steps to reduce the world’s dependence on CO2 intensive coal burning for energy supply,” says Eivind Hoff of Bellona Europa.
The capture test plant is a small-scale copy of a full-scale CO2 capture plant, which will reduce technical and commercial risks in large scale plants. The Longannet Power Station is the third biggest power station in Europe, with a net annual output of 2304 MW of electricity.
ScottishPower and Aker Clean Carbon are now starting a seven-month test period at Longannet.
