The Bellona Foundation has received the sad news of Thor Heyerdahl's demise. Our thoughts and condolences go to his family and closest friends.

In spite of his many ongoing projects, he also showed an interest in our work. On several occasions Thor Heyerdahl contacted the Bellona Foundation to offer his assistance, in particular in connection with Aleksandr Nikitin’s prosecution, about which we corresponded both electronically and by regular mail.

Thor Heyerdahl was an idol to many people. His tireless and fearless fight for his ideas and ideals have inspired and motivated several generations. His death is a great loss to the world at large. Yet, even at the end he showed such strength and motivation, as to create of his demise something larger than a mere departure from an Earthly existence.

Peace be with him.
