Bellona Europa co-signs NGO statement on CBAM expressing concerns about isolating it from FitFor55 package

Ahead of the Economic and Financial Affairs Council Meeting (ECOFIN), Bellona, together with a number of NGOs, signed a statement on ensuring the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) remains linked to work on the EU Emissions Trading System (ETS) Directive and other key aspects of the Fit for 55 package.

Two main demands are made:

  1. Ensure the integrity of the package and its ability to deliver on and exceed the level of ambition.
  2. The CBAM cannot be separated from ending free pollution permits under the EU ETS.
