UK funding new CCS projects

Publish date: April 23, 2009

BRUSSELS – British chancellor Alistair Darling announced several environmental commitments as he presented the UK's 2009 fiscal budget to parliament on Wednesday April 22nd. The government will allocate a further £1.4bn (€1.6bn) in low-carbon initiatives over the next three years. The initiative covers a new funding mechanism to support up to four carbon capture and storage (CCS) demonstration projects, and £90 million to fund detailed preparatory studies.

The Chancellor of the Exchequer’s announcement of the UK’s demonstration plans says that “the deployment of CCS will be key to the move to a low carbon energy supply (…) the increasing urgency of the climate change challenge and lessons learned from the competition to date mean that the Government now considers a new and more ambitious policy on CCS is appropriate”.

Chairman of Bellona Europa, Paal Frisvold says that “the symbolic effect of national initiatives in the funding of CCS is crucial for further deployment of CCS in Europe”.
