Peterhead CCS project hosts public meetings

Last week the Peterhead CO2 Capture and Storage (CCS) project in Scotland held a series of public meetings and exhibitions to inform and share plans with the local community. It is a welcome move as much of traditional public opposition to CCS stems from a felt lack of involvement in project planning or not enough understanding of the technology. Meetings will be held in Peterhead and nearby communities as well as in Aberdeen.

Shell and Scottish Southern Energy (SSE) are partners in the project to retrofit the Peterhead gas power plant with CO2capture and transport the gas to Shell’s Goldeneye gas field in the North Sea.

An announcement of whether the Peterhead project will receive co-funding from the UK government has been expected to be made in early 2014. It is as of yet amongst the preferred candidates for a share of 1.21 billion euro.  Initial funding of at least £20 million would be needed for Front End Engineering Design (FEED) studies to analyse and de-risk the costs of installing and running the selected capture technology at the site.
