Laurien joined Bellona in 2021 and leads the work on the decarbonisation of the industrial conglomeration in Belgium, the Netherlands and North Rhine-Westphalia. This followed 8 years as policy officer and spokesperson at Bond Beter Leefmilieu, the umbrella organisation of the Flemish environmental NGOs, where she specialized in climate and clean mobility policy and became a known face in the Belgian media. Laurien chaired the Belgian Climate Coalition and coordinated national climate campaigns with civil society and the unions. As co-founder and coordinator of Climate Express, Belgium’s first citizen climate movement, she organized a climate march of 14.000 people. In her college days, Laurien was student representative at Ghent University and founded sustainable student organisation d’Urgent. She holds a master degree in bioscience engineering from the University of Ghent and specialized in life cycle analysis (LCA) and exergy analysis at the University of Montréal. She speaks English, Dutch and French. In her spare time, Laurien loves spending time in nature - especially in the mountains - with her dog Henna and her horses.
