A physics graduate from the State University of St. Petersburg (formerly, Leningrad State University), Vladimir Levchenko worked as an astrophysicist at Abram Ioffe Physical Technical Institute of the USSR Academy of Sciences. He participated in the liquidation efforts at the site of the world’s worst nuclear catastrophe at Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant in 1986. Levchenko has worked with ecological NGOs since 1992. In 1997, he organised the Ecological Northwest Line (ENWL) information network and newsletter service. He has headed the ENWL project for ERC Bellona since July 2008. Levchenko is a professor, Doctor of Biological Sciences. He heads the Laboratory of Evolution Modelling at Ivan Sechenov Institute of Evolutionary Physiology and Biochemistry of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
