CCS projects

CO2 capture and storage (CCS) can be implemented at sources where large quantities of CO2 are emitted at a single point. The red spots in this interactive map show such point sources of CO2 and their size, so lots of red means a large potential for CCS.

The blue spots show on-going or planned CCS projects. Remember to use the filter on the map to see which projects are in operation and which projects that are still in the pre-commissioning phase.

Typical point sources of CO2 are coal and gas power plants, cement factories, refineries, chemicals factories, iron and steel mills, and oil and gas processing plants. You can choose what type of sources to display and see their individual share of total emissions in the CO2 sources tab. In total, the map includes close to 8400 sources of CO2, and almost 15 billion tons of CO2, which is about 53 percent of world’s total CO2 emissions per year, and about 40 percent of the total greenhouse gas emissions.

To benefit from economy of scale in capture, transportation and storage, it is desirable that the amount of CO2 captured at a site is as large as possible. If many large sources are located close to each other, this indicates good suitability for CCS. The blue spots show current and planned CCS projects, so lots of blue means many CCS projects. You can choose what type of CCS projects to display in the CCS projects tab.

Click anywhere on the map to find out what point sources and CCS projects the dots represent, and how large they are. This information is displayed in the Selection tab.

The main source of information about CO2 sources is a database built by the International Energy Agency’s GHG program. Information about CCS projects is gathered from a number of sources, including databases built individually by the Scottish Centre for CCS, ZEP, GCCSI, Stanford University, MIT, NETL and CO2CRC, as well as a number of other information sources online. Information is also gathered directly from project owners.
